Performance recorded 1981. Gramophone Magazine, 5/2003, Lindsay Kemp: "Philippe Herreweghe’s re-released recording is even older [than Niquet's version], having first seen the light of day in 1981, but the orchestral and choral contributions achieve a consistently higher level of technical polish. Ensemble is tight and articulation neatly etched, intonation is happier, and the choir are more satisfyingly focused. The recording is also clearer and more present, though the edits do administer the occasional slap in the face. Above all, however, there is beauty here as well as a telling solemnity, a sense that gentle, noble Death is at least somewhere in the vicinity. This is, in short, a performance with the carefully moulded contours, sensitively judged sonic qualities and sheer spiritual presence that we have come to recognise over the intervening years as true Herreweghe characteristics. Its coupling is, however, meaner than Niquet’s; Michel Corrette’s short orchestral Carillon des morts, written to complement Gilles’s work some 60 years after his death, is no more than a curio."
