专辑简介

A legend says that in past times in a small village at a three days' march away from Santiago de Cuba there used to be a row of trees along the main street carrying delicious juicy mango. One day, a group of soldiers arrived in the village craving for food. As they could not find anything else to eat, they satisfied their hunger and thirst with the ripe fruit. From this day on, the village has been known as Matahambre, the place, where hunger ends.
The citizens of Matahambre grow coffee and fruit. There is nothing like a Casa de la Cultura or other cultural institutions. The people are peasants. They work on the fields singing, inventing their own songs and rhythms.
The Sextet Matahambre Son are six musicians who, being children of ordinary peasants, never received a professional musical training when they were young. their songs tell stories of the East of Cuba, stories of Matahambre.
When Jose Ochoa had to make a stopover in Matahambre, he heard some music at dawn. Six musicians had gathered on a house porch. More and more people got together, they laughed and sang. The songs of the musicians on their improvised stage told stories everybody knew in the village:about Gavino, whose wife had walkedd out on him; about Bigote de Gato, who got his nickname because of his moustache and who now lives in Havanna; about the drunkard staggering through the streets at night; about the beautiful women, the fiestas, abanoned husbands and timid girls; about chicken and dogs. Small stories from a little village in the East of Cuba.
