"I could easily dispense with the word ‘German’ and replace it with ‘Human’." – Johannes Brahms From it’s first performance in Bremen Cathedral on Good Friday, 1868, Brahms’ "German Requiem" was hailed as a masterpiece. During the next ten years, the work was featured countless times wherever the resources to perform it were available. The present version of the Requiem, commissioned from Brahms for a London performance of the work is a revelation. No mere "piano transcription", Brahms boldly returned to his original sketches for the piece – itself an early version of the Sonata for Two Pianos in d minor – and reconceived his masterpiece for the new instrumentation.
As with many of Brahms’ four-hand arrangements, he chose to leave his efforts unsigned. But from the opening throbbing of the deep bass octaves, and the cascading chords and figurations throughout, it is clear that this long-lost arrangement is the work of the master.
The Grupo de Canto Coral have done a tremendous service to music lovers everywhere in giving this piece its World Premiere recording. Every choral nuance is clearly heard and the four-hand team of Lester and Perez deliver the full range of Brahms’ humanistic vision – from tender embrace to the terror of the final trump!
