With the Heartworms, former Velocity Girl member Archie Moore dropped all of his tendencies toward noisy rock in favor of a clean and occasionally dreamy pop approach. Mixed and edited by Trevor Holland, During takes Moore's songwriting (which was exceptionally strong, even on Velocity Girl's less-than-wonderful final album) and polishes it over with less standard arrangements and instrumentations, using a variety of brass, woodwinds and vintage organs. The only problem is that the band seems reluctant to take this approach to its extreme, sometimes sticking to indie-pop conventions when more abstract sounds would serve better — the sweet, fluffy sounds of the album's opener ("hollAnd") and closer ("Pop Factory on Strike") could have been wonderfully applied to the more guitar-oriented tracks in between.
