专辑简介
I've been trying to figure out how to classify this CD. Is it alternative, or weird, or just songs? The more I thought about it, the more difficult it became to classify. I was reading an article on post-modernism, and realised that this music really tipifies that. (And I mean "no center, just dialogue", when I say that.)
Start with "Language is a Virus." Back in 1986, that was a novel concept, before "meme" entered common intellectual vocabulary. But it's not just that.
Laurie Anderson deconstructs a number of things in her pieces. There is a touch of playfulness in the way she pauses in her lyrics, as if to let you think for a moment, as to where she might be going next: "paradise .. is exactly like where you are right now .. only .. much .. much .. better."
I enjoy "Smoke Rings", because the image of "Frank Sinatra sitting in a chair, blowing perfect smoke rings." is so well formed.
Why not five stars? Well, it's aged somewhat, and I don't think gracefully. However, I think it was a portend to the way society changed in the 90's. I think this and "United States Live", were her better works.
It's a soundtrack, but that doesn't matter much. The main relevance of the film, is that it emphasises that Laurie Anderson as a performance artist.
