It is highly unlikely, no actually it’s impossible that Waiting for Guinness could ever be accused of creating bland, low energy one-dimensional music. The music they have created on their third studio album Friend of Foe is enthralling, full-bodied and satisfyingly full of life. Opening with the jazzy energy of ‘Cadaver Swing’ the fun swinging tone of the album is set, immediately welcoming listeners to join a group of friends as they jam together.
Like many of the tracks ‘Bella Guera’ straddles the boundary between old school Southern jazz and Mexican soul. With a wonderful blend of languages this is a song that readily evokes visions of a ragtag group of performers entertaining the crowd in a dingy, dirty one-horse town pub. Lacking an overtly constrictive formal structure this track demonstrates the inviting musical looseness of Waiting for Guinness. Further showcasing the range of their musical styles, ‘Falling Down’ provides the perfect contrast; with its deeper darker vocal performance this is a track which engages both musically and interpretatively. Taking the form of an office lament, it is a song which appeals to anyone who dreams of escape. While couched in melancholy the song has a hopeful outlook, drawing listeners forward to something better.
Aside from their soulful vocal performances Friend or Foe also features several movingly insightful instrumentals, which appeal equally to the heart, soul and mind. ‘Wedding March’ is sad, hopeful, beautiful and inspired all at once. Successfully blending different styles throughout, this instrumental is filled with dramatic intensity and takes listeners on an emotional journey without the need for words. In a truly multicultural album ‘I Don’t Love My Baby’ has an almost Parisian swagger and once again relies on the emotive elements of instruments in combination to share an experience of heartache and loss. This wordless conversation with listeners is delivered in such convincing fashion that it is almost possible to see the cigarette smoke swirling and glass of red wine draining away as the tale unfolds.
‘Illorar’ is pure poetry delivered with deliberately measured pace and a perfectly subdued vocal performance which is kept fresh through a clever blend of languages. ‘Thank God for Maconochie’ is a slower dreamier track which feels like it has blown in from the sea with a smooth masculine sound, while weaving in a dynamic blend of musical instruments and styles. The title track, an instrumental, closes out the album and in it the Mexican influences can be keenly heard, all wrapped up in toe tapping and hand clapping pace.
The members of Waiting for Guinness have created a true sensory experience for listeners with their eclectic mix of unexpected musical offerings, all held together by their unique style. There is always something to surprise around the corner. While they are a band to appreciate live, their quick fire energy and crazy circus intensity ensures that those essential elements of spontaneity and unpredictability are effectively captured on this album. Like a town with many twists and turns to explore, Waiting for Guinness are a mystery to be uncovered, journeyed through and enjoyed.
