Pendragon's first full-length studio release could serve as the model for the stereotypical "neo-prog" album: it's full of keyboard and vocal-driven pop-rock, horribly cheesy, dramatic lyrics performed by a barely listenable lead singer and songs that are either short enough to be obvious candidates for radio airplay or long, aimlessly noodling tracks that would be best served if they were cut down to one-third of their size. All of that being said, this is one of the better examples of that type of particular music and is a minor classic in the field of neo-progressive.
　　Jack Hesse has done a fine job below describing the actual music on this album, so I'll say something about the place this record has in Pendragon's catalog. Pendragon's albums can be divided into two categories: the first few, including this one, seem to have been written with the idea of reaching a larger mainstream audience; consequently the pieces are simpler, somewhat shorter and less likely to appeal to the contemporary prog-rock fan. Those albums beginning with The World focus instead on reaching the progressive rock community (possibly due to their lack of commercial success). This is my interpretation, of course, but it's not unreasonable that some of these songs (particularly "Higher Circles") could have become singles during the short-lived 80's neo-prog fad. I find this band's 90's albums more interesting than their 80's ones, but there are some enjoyable tracks here, almost all on the first side. If you like neo-prog, this album is an essential; other prog fans will want to give this one a spin before buying.
