"PASTIME WITH GOOD COMPANY" 1998-2003
This recording, Alpha 901, celebrating Alpha's fifth anniversary is rather special. October 1998 saw the release of the first record on the Alpha label, Le Musiche di Bellerofonte Castaldi, performed by Guillemette Laurens and Vincent Dumestre with his ensemble Le Poème Harmonique. What might have been a one-off has in fact turned into a long-term project, and Alpha is now well and truly part of the French and international music scene.
Five years seem a short time; but I wanted to mark the event with a disc that was a little bit out of the ordinary, bringing together in their diversity some of the musicians who go along with us and give the label identity. With strong growth despite a crisis situation in the record world, it is vital for Alpha to keep on course in its artistic project, and at the same time maintain its growth notwithstanding the deconstructionof the distribution networks. We must also preserve the traditional craftsman's approach that has been ours for the past five years, while keeping up the development of a small firm.
This anniversary recording "PASTIME WITH GOOD COMPANY' is not a compilation. The recordings are all new, and most of them were made especially in July and August 2003, in a friendly, festive atmosphere. They are accompanied by photo-portraits of the musicians taken on the same occasion by Robin Davies.
