The male choir reached its height of popularity during the 19th century. Nearly every village had groups of amateurs that would regularly get together to rehearse and perform. Naturally, there was a highly lucrative market for composers to write music for these ensembles. Much of this music was utilitarian, and has been rightfully forgotten. The pieces on this CD, however, should receive a permanent place in the repertoire.
