Throughout the 20th century, Robert Casadesus embodied the excellence of French piano-playing — far more so, incidentally, in the USA and Britain than in France. Also a composer, Casadesus was possessed of an exceptional musical intelligence and a moral rigour which enabled him to approach perfection both in 20th-century French music and in the German Romantic repertoire, particularly with regard to Mozart and Beethoven. His limpid, exquisite playing combined power with elegance and control. Casadesus may have lacked the Romantic imagination of a Cortot or a Fran?ois, but he was a more even concert performer, and was capable of taking bold risks. He formed one of the most greatest duos of the post-war period, with the violinist Zino Francescatti, and their complete recording of Beethoven's sonatas remains one of the high points of the discography. In this exceptionally consistent collection, connoisseurs will rediscover Beethoven as an eminently classical artist who knows how to make us aware of "the glint of chaos beneath the veil of order". The Bonus section finds Zino Francescatti, this time without his favourite partner, giving a 1961 recital in Bordeaux, in which his dazzling technique and warm sound are fully in evidence in Bazzini's La Ronde des lutins.
