Bruce Huron and I had been planning a project of his music throughout the fall of 2004. We knew that we were going to be working with trumpeter Toby Mak, and a very talented drummer, Joao Silvestre. We had planned concerts in Hong Kong in the Hong Kong City Festival, and we had also planned a few gigs in China. And we had also planned for three days of recording.
The Hong Kong concerts went really well, and we hunkered down in the studio for the recordings. For some reason, everybody was getting on everyone else’s nerves. That’s what I remember, and Bruce was concerned that we were getting bogged down, and just weren’t getting in the groove. I felt that way too. I felt like Joao was being too much of a temperamental prima donna pain in the ass, and that perhaps Bruce was being overly critical. And that basically everything I played sucked ass. We struggled for two days like this, and finally on the third day, we started recording some of the particularly troubled tunes again. And magic happened from the beginning of the day.
When Bruce and I assessed the material, we both had deep questions about its validity, and even did a session in NY in Feb. 05 with some star musicians, just to make sure that we represented the music well. But as time went on, I started to forget how I felt when we were doing the recordings in Hong Kong, and I started finding that perhaps all that tension led to some real musical excitement and imaginative expression. And of course there was that third, fucking incredible day. We recorded a lot of material in those three days, really exhausted ourselves. So finally I was able to pick out a really great album’s worth of material. It didn’t take me long to mix, and I mastered it in the summer of 05 in the same sessions as the mastering for Dual Mono: Williamsburg. I remember that even brother Tony liked this music, which was an important validation for me.
And the NY version of Proper Villains is very compelling too. It’s in the post-production queue. Bruce really wanted me to do some more effecty treatments of that stuff, and I plan to do it someday. I had farmed out the first mix of PV NY, but I didn’t think that the bass was well represented, and also there were a lot of things that Bruce wanted to try. So maybe this year. I hope so.

2004年秋天Bruce Huron和我原本计划了一个他的音乐项目。我们知道将和小号手Toby Mak以及才华洋溢的鼓手Joao Silvestre合作。我们原定计划在香港举办音乐会，在大陆也计划了几场，还计划了三天录音的时间。

当BRUCE和我评估歌曲时，我们对其准确性有深深的疑问。甚至为此于2月5号在纽约与一些星级音乐家开了一个会议，确保我们可以完美地演绎音乐。但随着时间的推移，我开始忘记在香港做录音时的感受，并开始追寻那种引发真正的音乐激越与创意的高涨情绪。当然来自于那他妈的难以置信的第三天。我们灌录了很多歌曲在那三天，那是使我们筋疲力尽的三天。最终我终于找寻到一张专辑的音乐价值。混音并没有花费我太多时间，05年夏天制作完毕，与此同期我制作了Dual Mono的专辑：Williamsburg。我记得连兄弟TONY都喜欢这张专辑，这是对我的一个重要肯定。
Proper Villains的纽约版也十分另人期待与兴奋。但其还在后期加工当中。Bruce十分希望我有效改造加工那些材料，我也计划将来某天会做。我已经递交了 PV NY的首张混音。但我想贝斯的演奏效果不太好，Bruce还想尝试很多东西，因此我希望或者在这一年去搞。
