I've been waiting a long, long, long time for this release. For years now Sweden's Crazy Lixx have been teasing listeners to the point of torture with their excellent, but far too short, single releases. Now that Loud Minority has finally arrived the chances of it living up to my lofty expectations are almost nil, but it comes damn close.
What I don't like about this CD is what everyone else will love, and that is the picture perfect production supplied by Swedish guru Chris Laney (of Zan Clan and Animal fame). Laney has turned Crazy Lixx into a professional and polished rock band, a band that has talent and maturity that far exceed their years. It is a production that could rival that of Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood and Def Leppard's Hysteria - it is that huge! Personally I like a rawer sound, but judging by the sales of those aforementioned albums I am in the minority here.
The songs are exactly what I expected from Crazy Lixx however, filled with big hooks and melodies. For being such a young band it is amazing that they are able to release such catchy material, and on such a consistent basis. Loud Minority kicks things off with the Skid Row influenced "Hell Or High Water" and doesn't let up from there. The newest single "Want It" is pure 80s rock, complete with an abundance of memorable guitar riffs and layered back-up vocals. "Make Ends Meet" starts off as a ballad before building up into one of the best songs on the disc while "Boneyard" shows that the band can crank up the volume to 11.
Most of Crazy Lixx's previously released material is included as well. "Heroes Are Forever" sounds as good today as it did on its single release earlier this year as does the anthem "Do Or Die". If you need proof of how far this band has evolved look no further than "Death Row", which has been completely revamped with lush harmonies, although in this case I prefer the original.
Crazy Lixx is poised for greatness, proving once again that they are among the best of the new crew of hard rock wannabes. I wish they would have kept a little more grit under their fingernails, but the songs are so great that Loud Minority is proving to be one of the best releases so far this year. The 80s are alive and well!
