Not a bad record, very pretty and cinematic melodies from an instrumental band I knew nothing about when I bought their record. A very pleasent and warm listen with beautifully composed songs. But I do agree with the reviewer below me, it's a bit too pleasent in that it's a bit difficult to get really into the record after multiple listens since this record is so pleasent. But the talent behind the arrangements and the charm of the record will ensure this band will find a loyal audience.
L'ile de Sept Villes is the third full length record from Toronto's instrumental post-rock collective, the Hylozoists. The group continues to eschew the standard guitar-bass-drums line-up in favour of more orchestral leanings, creating an album of dramatic-sounding pleasantries.
Instrumental post-rock is an extremely saturated genre. L'ile de Sept Villes will do nothing to change this, so if you've had enough instrumental "lets start quiet and then get loud" music, this won't change your mind. The Hylozoists do employ some eclectic instrumentation to set themselves apart, but the general sound remains rooted in the theatrical (organs and strings aplenty). "Bubbles&Wheezy" is a standout track, employing a driving tambourine-infused drumbeat and subtle guitar distortion. It's an especially beautiful song that manages to breeze through its five-minute running time.
L'ile de Sept Villes is a pleasant album. It's not challenging, and its forty-minute running time goes by rather quickly. This accessibility does tone down the overall rewards that repeated listening would grant, so even though this is orchestral post-rock, don't be expecting a Rachel's album. The song structures here are undeniably "pop", so if you're unfamiliar with but curious about the post-rock genre, this is a pretty friendly place to start.
