Good Will Hunting, directed by Gus van Sant, starring Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsg?rd and Minnie Driver among others, is one of my favorite films. Its feel good story, always makes me... feel good. Danny Elfman's score for the film earned the composer his first Academy Award nomination (the same year as his score for Men in Black was nominated in the comedy category) but was never given a decent official release - just two cues on the original soundtrack. Thanks to the Academy Award nomination, the composer decided to release a promotional CD, with the complete score.
The way Elfman's score works in the film is nothing but great. It isn't used much - there are only about 25 minutes of score in the film - and it is mostly very low key and laid back, but when it is heard, it certainly helps in making the film the great experience it is. I'll take the "Main Title" as an example. With what best can be described as complex sounds, as well as quitar and subtle whistle - parts of the score, such as the main theme, has a very distinct Irish flavor - Elfman perfectly sets the tone of the film. It is a great piece, and perfectly matches the images.
However, no matter how good it works in the film, the score is fairly uninteresting on CD. Mostly because the majority of the music is atmospheric underscore, without any noteworthy musical progress or melody. Elfman's score for Good Will Hunting is mostly ambient music, which can be hard listening to for a longer time. The score has more of the new Elfman, than the old, i.e. the music has more in common with Elfman's scores for Instinct and A Simple Plan than the melodic scores for Batman and Edward Scissorhands.
It is, as already stated, a very complex score, as Elfman explores new musical textures and ideas. With the rich flora of instruments, Elfman creates a score that almost shimmers. It is almost magical in its sound and mood.
