专辑简介

"Madness, absolute complete madness," to use Bill's favorite phrase as we'd be packing up the van every morning on the trek across America that produced this album. That would pretty much describe the four months I spent following Roadkill Bill Jabanoski around as he did an seemingly endless tour of clubs in America and Canada. I'd worked the boards while his last album, "Sound and Fury" was recorded in Key West, and the two of us had struck up a friendship of sorts. I say "of sorts" because as a woman and someone whose very serious about my profession, and being really well aware of Bill's reputation on the island, I tried to keep things as professional as possible. So when he asked me to hit the road with him on this crazed project I was initially really hesitant. I'm glad I didn't give in to that hesitation, because I'll probably never spend another more incredible four months of my life and despite the fact that Bill does drink like a fish and his reputation for lechery is very well deserved, I've never met anyone as serious about his art, about telling common peoples stories or about giving an audience a good performance every night as he is. This isn't a live album. So after every night's show, we'd get up early and go record in whatever studio I'd found the day before. We worked in really good recording studios in Nashville, Montreal, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In recording studios where the board was literally a museum piece in towns in Iowa, South Dakota, and Montana. But we kept working. And I really learned how to make a record keeping the sound consistent from the best studio in Nashville to working in a barn in Billings, Montana. Bill had started out with a lot of new songs but he'd just keep writing more and more as we went on and with his twelve-string, fiddle, telecaster, and saxophone, we'd weave magic in the overdubs wherever we were. At the end of the day, I'd be exhausted, but a lot of times I'd go see him play his gig anyway. I guess he's right, Jack Daneils really is a power drink. Because he kept delivering the goods every night at his gigs. People laughing. People dancing. People looking threatened when he sings about Africa and Iraq. Florence Martus runs over two hours long, and there isn't a dead moment on it. No filler. No songs without passion, or wild satire, or just plain honesty. Now that I've had some time to think about it, I realized we had caught a country losing its mind, frustrated, and on the brink of a meaningless and cruel war, just before it had really blown its mind, as it has on St. Patrick's day, 2003, when I'm writing this.
