专辑简介

Short but sweet - that's the basic summary of Bruce Broughton's score for Homeward Bound, an enjoyable Disney-made shaggy dog story about three intrepid family pets who journey across the vast unknown, facing danger at every turn, as they strive to be re-united with their pint-sized owners. With the voice talents of Michael J. Fox (as Chance, a mischievous puppy), Sally Field (as Sassy, a narcissistic cat) and the late, great Don Ameche (as Shadow, a proud, noble Golden Retriever), this is heart-warming entertainment for pint-sized film fans, and the score makes for an enjoyable listen to boot.
Bruce Broughton is a great melody writer, and he endows the main theme for Homeward Bound with a heroic, adventurous fanfare for horns and orchestra which freely adopts the musical standards set out by Aaron Copland. It is present in many cues, and normally accompanies the many loving landscape shots of the American northwest director Duwayne Dunham includes in the film. It is afforded particularly memorable renditions at the beginning of the opener, 'My Name Is Chance', and again in the marvellous 'The Journey Begins', while in 'Reunited' and 'End Credits' is it performed with appropriate spine-tingling gusto in the greatest Disney tradition. Despite being a family film, Broughton is still not content to rest on his laurels, and he indulges himself with some clever sub-themes as the score wears on. The second half of 'My Name Is Chance' is a tremendous scherzo which launches headlong into a series of breathless bluegrassy action sequences, interspersed with a lively guitar motif which regularly accompanies the amusing antics of the little puppy. 'Fording The River' includes the main performance of the sweet string motif for Sassy, although here the theme is performed in a slightly more urgent manner as the cue underscores a scene in which the cat nearly drowns!
In 'The Cougar', Broughton works loud, dissonant chords and unsettling orchestral effects into a romping action cue, while in 'Escape From The Pound' the music adopts some jazzy clarinet riffs into a short but boisterous piece. There is little more left to say about Homeward Bound really, other than that it serves as an ideal showcase for Broughton's melodic know-how and craftsmanship. As he has proven in scores such as Silverado and Tombstone, Bruce Broughton has a musical affinity with the American countryside and, although this score is not a western per se, it certainly maintains the same character, tone and some of the orchestration as those earlier works.
Family movie scores always tend to adopt the same characteristics, with a big orchestral theme and plenty of "magic", and Homeward Bound is no different - after all, it is made by the folks at the Magic Kingdom, where audience acceptance is the paramount concern. One thing worth noting is that, for some reason, Intrada's sound mix is a little peculiar, meaning that the volume level of the CD is quite low, and subsequently you have to crank up the noise quite high in order to appreciate the music fully. Despite this technical hitch, and the extremely short running time (just over 30 minutes), Homeward Bound is a still thoroughly enjoyable score, and one which fans of Broughton's work are sure to appreciate.
