Since she charmed the hearts of many with her sweet voice in the first season of Singapore Idol, Daphne Khoo has tried on several other identities in the last several years from being an indie rock chic to a member of an all girl hip hop dance group. In “Desperate”, her first solo album to be released in December 2007, Daphne returns to her first love and reveals a more matured voice and her inner emotions through eleven mostly self composed pop rock tracks.
The songs reflect her experiences since she was sixteen and are heartfelt and lyrical with an air of innocence. Here is a young girl grappling with issues of joy, love, hurt and even moments of hopelessness. The tunes are exceedingly listenable with several stand-out tracks like “J-Tusks”; which express her tender heart being wretched by unrequited love. In “Wrong”, a hit-worthy pop rock track, Daphne sings of teenage angst against strict parental control. And before the music pundits classify her as our local Avril Lavigne, this young singer song writer displays a new found sense of self awareness in “Letting Go” where she sings of “finding out happiness is something you can choose”.
“Desperate” also contains other little gems like “Tribute” and “Charlene” that are personal tracks penned for her dance instructor and a little baby girl. Here Daphne shows that she also excels in crafting heartfelt feel-good ditties that will appeal to her traditional fan base of young girls.
The album features fine musicians like guitarist Jude Lee, Masashi Kimura, bassist Mark Pichay and drummer Jonathan Ong. In “Doll” the first single from the album, music arranger Amir Masoh brings in an accordion that evokes for the listener the sense of being in a carnival. Through the perspective of a doll sitting in a window display, Daphne sings of being the center of attention one day and being neglected with the passage of time. This is unlikely to happen to our former Singapore Idol finalist with this winning album that will reintroduce her to the public; in a showcase that reveals a more developed profile of Daphne that no talent show is able.
A great deal has happened in Daphne’s life since being 3rd runner up in Singapore Idol. Apart from her other musical venture as lead singer for indie rock band West Grand Boulevard, she was the main host for Kid’s Central’s “Bring Your Toothbrush”, and “Idol on Demand”. In addition, Daphne is engaged regularly by TCS for voice-overs for Kids Central. Like a hyper kinetic youth with an endless well of energy, she also participated in another talent show “Dance Floor” as a member of hip hop dance group Snap. On regular days, Daphne is a Mass Communication student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and a sibling to two sisters.
