Recorded March 1993, remastering June 2008
Originally recorded in July 1992 for the Astrée label, the recording has been extremely well remastered for this multi-channel SACD reissue.
Tarquinio Merula (1595-1665) was born in Busseto and probably educated at Cremona Cathedral. He held posts at Lodi, Warsaw, Cremona and Bergamo though his appointments were not without their difficulties. He pioneered the use of several forms later to become the backbone of baroque music including that of the sinfonia and cantata. He was one of the leading composers of modern music of his time.
The words used for these songs are delightful; most are love-oriented and the passion is colourfully and imaginatively described. . Hor ch'è tempo di dormire (Now it is time to sleep) is a lullaby sung by a mother to her child, Mary to Jesus, the mood becoming darker as she ends warning the child of the difficulties to come. Quando gli ucelli portaranno i Zoccoli (When Birds Wear Clogs) is a charming song with quirky words, telling how it is really impossible the singer will forget her love, and cease mourning. In Un bambin che va alla scola (Alas, a childish schoolboy) the boy sings of his woes as he has become ensnared in love "like a little sparrow", and the tune, as with others on this disc, is based on popular folksong.
It almost goes without saying that Montserrat Figueras sings these songs magnificently. Her pure voice colours the words effortlessly and seamlessly. There are also two instrumental solos, a toccata for harp played by Andrew Lawrence-King and a capriccio for harpsichord played by Ton Koopman, and these add variety to the mix, both superbly played.
Originally recorded in Valkkoog Church, Holland, in July 1992 for the Astrée label, the recording has been extremely well remastered for the multi-channel SACD reissue by Manuel Mohino and the sound quality is all one can wish for. Presentation is up to Alia Vox's usual standard, with deluxe booklet in colour, excellent essay and full texts. It's a joy to welcome back these superb recordings in Alia Vox's Heritage series.
Diapason- No. 396 : Denis Morrier
  Summarized or shortened:
Denis Morrier does not fail to underline the contribution to this recording of interpreters whom it describes as"... among most important of the moment " (i.e. 1993). But it adds: "... the principal interest of this recording resides, of course, in the interpreted vocal parts, with sensitivity and heat by the inimitable voice and so characteristic, of Montserrat Figueras. The Catalan singer more allured us in the madrigaux spiritual ones..., that in fresh and the more decorated canzonette, where one can sometimes detect some inaccuracies of accuracy or vocalization ".
Continuing its article, written Morrier: "This recording conceals however a pure masterpiece, of a beauty strange and upsetting, the spiritual madrigal" Hor chè tempo di dormire ", kind of long lullaby written on low been obstinated (and quickly obsessing) of two notes only, filled up striking dissonances justified by a text of an incredible cruelty (the Blessed Virgin rocks her child, contemplates each part of its small body and states which torments will be inflicted to them at the moment of Passion - "these hands and these feet… pointed nails will bore them ".
It concludes by stressing that "this pathetic part and sinks exhaling a rare emotional intensity (of not to be doubted, the print of Jordi Savall), is from now on to count among the strongest achievements and most outstanding of Montserrat Figueras".
  Presto Classical
The HERITAGE collection, launched by Alia Vox in 2007 aims to offer a fresh vision of the recordings that Jordi Savall, Montserrat Figueras and their ensembles made for the Astrée label between 1977 and 1996. This unique discographic legacy of almost 70 albums will be remastered and edited with the meticulous care that has been Alia Vox's hallmark since the label was founded in 1998. Both past and present productions featuring the Alia Vox artists' performances will thus be available under a single banner, allowing listeners to measure the breadth and continuity of their work over more than 30 years. Tarquinio Merula (1594 or 1595-1665) was an Italian composer, organist and violinist of the early Baroque era. Although mainly active in Cremona, stylistically he was a member of the Venetian school and one of the most progressive Italian composers of the early 17th century, a key figure in the early development of several forms such as the cantata, the aria, the sonatas da chiesa and da camera, variations on a ground bass and the sinfonia.
One of the finest albums ever recorded by Montserrat Figueras, she has developed a reputation for the interpretation of early vocal music combining historical fidelity with vitality. In the 1970s, she rose to eminence as one of a generation of musicians who realised that vocal music before 1800 required a new technical and stylistic approach with emphasis on the poetic and spiritual dimension of the text. With the quality of her voice and the expertise of the ensemble backing her, including Jordi Savall and Ton Koopman, she brings an intimacy to her performances few other vocalists can match. Earlier this year, Jordi Savall was appointed European Union ambassador for intercultural dialogue. This distinction, together with the title of “Artist for Peace” that he shares with his wife Montserrat Figueras, marks the culmination and recognition of his work over more than 30 years on behalf of neglected and marginalised musical traditions and cultures such as those which flourished Spain before the Christian reconquest, as well as the musical dialogue between East and West.
