Originally issued in the late 1950s under the small Pye logo, this recording appeared in the U.S., minus the Legends 4,6 and 7 on both Mercury (mono only) and Vanguard (stereo). It later emerged on the Marble Arch label in Britain. Over the last few decades it seems to have received little attention. A real shame, because it presents Sir John Barbirolli in some of his finest moments, especially in regard to the wonderfully caring, expressive quality so frequently characteristic of his conducting style. It's difficult not to be charmed by his readings of Scherzo Capriccioso and the three Dvorak Legends he offers here, but the greatest attention focuses obviously on the Czech composer's gloriously tuneful Eighth Symphony. Those who have read my profile comments and reviews know that I have special feelings for this piece, and I am familiar with a large number of its individual interpretations. Though perhaps not quite as idiomatic as the versions of Kubelik, Kertesz and Talich, Barbirolli's communicates the poetic and dynamic elements in a fashion that is consistently endearing, and I rank his conception on the same level with theirs. Though this disc is discontinued, if you love Dvorak, and this work in particular as much as I do, I advise you to seize the opportunity to own and enjoy this limited availability cd. I seriously doubt you will be disappointed.
