专辑简介

THE SEPHARDIC JEWS
On March 31, 1492, the Catholic Sovereigns of Spain, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, signed the royal decree by which all Jews then residing in territories under the monarchs' political control were given four months to abandon Spanish soil. This event marked the end of the Jews' peaceful coexistence with Muslims and Christians, which had prevailed since at least the 4th Century, according to the earliest reliable documents, although the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula surely dates from a much earlier period. While historians disagree over the true motive behind the expulsion, it seems clear that there was no single cause but rather a confluence of interrelated ones, ranging from purely religious considerations to those of an economic nature. In any case, the most reliable estimates indicate that some 100,000 Spanish Jews chose exile, unlike those who publicly renounced Judaism in order to remain on soil they considered as much their own as anyone's. The exiles spread out through Portugal (which also expelled them), North Africa, the Low Countries, and especially the eastern Mediterranean region, which was then part of the Turkish empire. From that time forward, the Sephardim, or "sefard?es" --that is, Jews descended from those 15th-century exiles form "Sepharad", as they themselves called Spain-- have managed to preserve numerous Hispanic cultural traits, channeling these through the medium of Judeo-Spanish, their own variant of the Spanish language. In this way the have faithfully maintained traditional Spanish themes and motifs that have come down to us as moving proof of their constancy and their abiding historical memory. [...]

Our interest in this music is basically two-fold: we regard it as an essential, through obviously estranged, component of Spanish musical folklore (similarity of themes and motifs, identical means of transmission, etc.); moreover, we are sensitive to the historical debt owed to a people who have managed to preserve some of the most worthy elements of the Spanish tradition, despite the displacements and hardships they have endured.
