专辑简介

By: Jon Prusik
Patchy first outing reissued for influential German EBM band still holds water with the gifts it has to bear. This being a reissue, I must say that I’m glad to finally own some of this material that I have been hearing about for years, but never having actually heard. The folly of being in your late twenties when all your favorite music was made for someone 10 to 15 years older is blatantly apparent in situations like these, though the powers that be have been good about moving material from the previous decade to the next with reissues and box sets. That was the case when in 2001 Dependent released the End of the Line 4-CD box set of music by The Klinik. The box comprises a mixture of album tracks, live material, and remixes from contemporary artists such as Covenant, Suicide Commando, Numb, and Dirk himself donated a mix as Dive.
That being said, most bands do not have a great first outing with their debut album; The Klinik is no different. Though they would later improve upon their methods of musical creation, this album is left as a patchy creation at best. Originally released in 1987, its highlights include the infectious “Hours + Hours” and the long brooding dirge “Nautilus,” as well as the driving sounds of “Braindamage,” and certainly the gloomy atmosphere of “Sabotage” deserves an honorable mention. There are only four real clunkers on this album, and even though that is not a large number, it’s annoying to have that many causes to hit the skip button. The rest of the disc consists of satisfactory live tracks, namely The Klinik staple, “Sick in Your Mind.”
Things The Klinik and Skinny Puppy did during this time, like movie voice samples, would later be the thing of cliché amongst bands such as :Wumpscut: and Velvet Acid Christ. While the scope of the album’s music and subsequent releases was heavily influenced by albums like Skinny Puppy’s Remission and Bites, these German boys definitely gave it all a different bit of flare. They were not the horror movie perversion of Throbbing Gristle and synthpop, but something a bit more militant, brooding deeply behind a hazy mist of smoke that left audible shrapnel in the ears of its listeners. Later, we would see the paths that both bands would take, but as for The Klinik’s case they would disband and we would see Dive emerge from the mind of Dirk Ivens. Yet one thing was for certain: amidst the heavy and obvious influences, they were a band that did something else with the foundation of sound whose cement had not hardened yet and helped move forward the coming noise movement, which was one of the several things Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Skinny Puppy helped conceive.
