A massive set of Monk interpretations -- easily one of the greatest tributes to Thelonius we've ever seen, and a package that features more than just piano parts too! The performance is divided into four different sets -- each one featuring a different pianist -- either Muhal Richard Abrams, Barry Harris, Anthony Davis, or Mal Waldron -- all of whom make for surprisingly fresh choices for the program! But almost equally great are the other players too -- a lineup that includes Don Cherry on trumpet, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Charlie Rouse on tenor, and Roswell Rudd on trombone -- all adding in some wonderful Monkish lines on horns, in ways that really expand the sound and take this past some of the overdone straight piano tributes to Monk we've seen over the years. Rhythm is by Richard Davis on bass and either Ed Blackwell or Ben Riley on drums -- and the 4CD set features 30 tracks that include "Ruby My Dear", "Light Blue", "Evidence", "Monk's Mood", "Reflections", "Gallop's Gallop", "I Mean You", "Let's Call This", "Round Midnight", "Well You Needn't", "Thelonious", and "Friday The 13th". And in case you're wondering, all of the Monk compositions only get played once throughout the entire performance.
