Magnificent violinist Natalia Prischepenko is the founder of the well-known Artemis Quartet. Sebastian Klinger is solo cellist with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra under the direction of Maris Janssons.
Shostakovich's Romances to Poems by Alexander Blok, with their desperate serenity, are among the most deeply moving masterworks that owe their birth to Mstislav Rostropovich, who gave the first performance with his wife Galina Vishnevskaya. The other work on this recording needs little introduction: the Piano Trio No. 2 has long been acknowledged as one of the most powerful chamber works of the twentieth century. It has seldom been performed with such contagious commitment.
