From his beginnings as a New York graffiti artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat became one of the 1980s' most talked-about artists before his premature death at 27, in 1988. Many of his canvases portray a vibrant merging of African-American culture, wry social commentary, and a passion for music. In particular, the inspiration he drew from bebop pioneers such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie made for some of Basquiat's most compelling works.
