专辑简介

Korpse, a little known death metal band out of Aberdeen, Scotland, ought to be remembered as one of those early 90's charmingly quirky death metal acts that managed to lay down some really fantastic riffs in order to be more than just a showcase of goofiness. They're not exactly the same, but the closest musical milestone might be Pungent Stench mixed with Pan.Thy.Monium or something. The band veers between ominous sounding tremolo, muscular thrash and even hard rock and heavy metal like it's the only logical thing to do. Perhaps they were right, because even as unexpected as some of the transitions are, I can't help but smile and say to myself, "oh, that bit was pretty cool sounding!"
Each of the instrumental performances on the album is praiseworthy. The drums are stuttering madness, sometimes playing pretty straightforward rock beats or double bass rolls, but more often Taff is gussying up his thrash beats with neat little double bass accents or adding near constant fills to the more basic drum patterns. Check out his performance near the end of "X"; all that calls for is a slow, heavy beat to fit over the doomy riff but instead the space is filled to the brim with accents. It's strange, really. Normally in circumstances like these, I find myself thinking, "oh shut up and just bash some drums, damnit." However, none of these drum patterns sound like limp-wristed showboating but instead like the byproduct of a dude who just couldn't contain the rock. The bass isn't quite as busy, but frontman Fluff has some really awesome bass tone that's totally distinct from the guitars and has its own voice with an equal share in the mix. It's sort of like the tone on None So Vile except sounds like it's being played with a pick and is generally lower pitched. Fluff's basslines aren't anywhere near that masturbatory, either, which is fine by me. Finally, we have guitarist Sid, who is just at home delivering crushing, doomy heaps of death as he is working the wah pedal for a guitar solo that wouldn't be out of place in something David Gilmour had his hands in. There are some seriously screwy melodic runs here and there, too, but the meat of the guitar playing is ultra-heavy, midpaced groovy death metal.
Fluff's vocal technique, which is three parts Karl Willetts and one part Martin Van Drunen, serves to keep the band's genre tied down even when they're taking some pretty serious excursions from the roots of death metal. Normally I'd hope for some more varied vocals, maybe some blackened backing vocals or even some screams courtesy of Fluff himself, but instead I'm content with the way things are as otherwise this release would be just a little too strange. Plus, the dude can growl with the best of 'em so I really can't ask for more.
Though the lads in Korpse prove themselves more than capable musicians, where they really shine is in their collective ability to write a great song. Take the title track, for instance, which slowly fades in with an onslaught of tribal drumming and feedback. Eventually Fluff's thundering bass comes in, but it's not until Sid kicks on the distortion that you can really go, "YEAHHHH! FUCKIN' DEATH METAL!" And trust me, you will. Right off the bat we have some wah-heavy lead guitar, lots of bouncy death metal riffs with a decent bit of thrash, then a sort of melodic speed metal bit that transitions into a noisy lead guitar section, after which we get an awesome thrash break with more of that psychedelic guitar soloing, back into sledgehammer death metal riffing that gets stretched out like taffy for the conclusion. The really incredible thing is, though, that it all makes sense within the context of the song and the album as a whole. On top of that, the title track I just described is both one of the more straightforward and least awesome songs on the album! It's as if the band is inspired to write better and better riffs the stranger the song is that they appear in. I spent a lot of time wondering how the band was able to bring together such seemingly unrelated musical elements while at the same time constantly reinforcing the "Korpse sound," but in the end I decided that it's most likely the result of lots and lots of drugs. I mean, this is a Scottish death metal band named Korpse, featuring three dudes named Fluff, Sid and Taff. Whatever their inspiration may have been, these guys deserve to be getting praise with all of the Timeghouls and Demiliches and other esoteric death metal bands of the early 90's that time forgot and the internet has since rediscovered. Fantastic stuff and a must-hear for any death metal fan.
