主唱仱和吉他手Tao在2001-2003年期間組了Siren Loss樂團，曲風吵雜而冷澀，後來團員們各自忙碌，就停止活動了。但過了不久，兩人又重新開始寫歌，決定一改過去冷澀的風格，企圖尋求一種流行度較高，卻又隱含著了陰冷氣息的新曲風。在電腦的輔助下，他們寫出一首又一首的歌曲，慢慢拿捏著流行與另纇之間的尺度。
有一天，他們決定要將歌曲錄成完整的demo，於是間接的請到了鼓手小bu來錄製鼓的部份。在聽到live的鼓聲之後，他們心中又燃起了組團的念頭，於是邀請了大學學弟伊俊來擔任吉他手，並且在網路上找到了bass手Kay。而鼓手的職位，則在應徵了一大圈之後，又回到經驗豐富可靠的小bu身上。
團名「藍絲絨」取材自大衛．林區的同名電影。之所以會以電影為名，是因為聽過他們音樂的人都異口同聲稱其編曲「具有強烈的畫面性」。而林區的電影，有點灰又有點亮，有點柔又有點硬，正符合了他們企圖營造的氛圍。
成為完整的樂團後，「藍絲絨」就彷佛如虎添翼一般，開始進行創作更具有樂團氣息的歌曲。「藍絲絨」的音樂難以被歸纇，因為它的聲音是建立在一群人同時吸收了太多不同曲風的情況之上，然而儘管如此，他們卻能在這當中保持著某種統一性，好比有一種難以用文字或術語來解釋的中心理念存在。英式搖滾、後龐克／歌德、與日系搖滾，可以說是「藍絲絨」的三大上游，但是若拿他們的音樂與這三者相較，又會感到一股莫名的抗拒，對於分纇的抗拒。由此可以感受到，他們果真是原創的，但是一種不斷的抄襲所產生的原創，一種抄襲過多的原創，畢竟這個時代還有誰能夠說他是原創的。
「藍絲絨」有著讓人想要不斷往前走路的時間感，然而在這之上卻是吉他交織出來的矇矓空間感。在時間和空間的交會點上面，有仱時而中性厚實，時而陰性柔軟的聲音。不論怎麼說，音樂這種東西都是很難解釋的，或許你覺得不應該這樣描述，那麼，你來看看，或許就會有你自己的說法。
Vocalist Gin and guitarist Tao formed Siren Loss in 2001. They played music that was so inaccessible that they couldn't even dig it themselves. Then the musicians got busy and they disbanded around 2003. But shortly after, the duo started writing songs again. They decided to change the old ways and make their music slightly more pop-oriented, but still retaining some of their characteristic coldness beneath it. With the help of Tao's computer, they wrote many songs, trying to walk the fine line between the mainstream and the alternative.
One day, they decided to record some better demos with live drums, so they hired Ken to play drums on some of their tracks. After so many days spent listening to midi drums, the sound of a live drummer inspired the two to consider forming a band again. They recruited Yi-jun, whom they know from college, to play some nice guitars, and later met bass player Kay through the internet. After auditioning a couple of other drummers, it was finally settled that Ken should continue to play with them.
The name is inspired by the David Lynch movie. The reason being: most who have heard their music have used the term "cinematic" to describe their atmosphere, and David Lynch's cinema is pretty much akin to the mood they aspire to create.
After becoming a five-piece band, Blue Velvets are now writing new songs with a more rock-oriented sound. The music of Blue Velvets is difficult to categorize, because it stems from a group of people who couldn't settle on a genre they really like. But somehow a sense of unity is achieved, as if there was an unexplainable concept behind it all. Although J-rock, Britpop, and goth/post-punk are the major influences behind Blue Velvets, you would find that they do not sound like either of the three. Therefore, they are original, even if their originality is a product of too much copying.
Blue Velvets have a sense of time and rhythm that makes one want to walk forward, step by step. On top of that, the guitars provide a sense of space. At the intersection of time and space, there is the presence of Lucy's delivery, which is sometimes asexual and other times feminine. Anyhow, music is something not to be explained. Maybe you don't agree with this description. Then come and see for yourself, perhaps you may come up with better words...
