Although Alphataurus only released one album before they disbanded, they had started recording a second album, which was to remain incomplete due to the departure of their lead singer. Mellow Records took these recordings in the mid 90's and packaged them up with a less than tasteful naked-chicks-on-dragons cover and released it all as Dietro l'Uragano. The title, which means "inside the hurricane," is a reference to a track on the first album called "Dopo l'Uragano".
The only vocals on the album appear for a short time on the last track, and I am not entirely sure who is singing. The vocals sound a little muddy and too far back in the mix for the short time that they are on. The effect of having not having recorded the vocal tracks is that there are large sections of music intended to work as backing music which have to work on their own. As a result, the entire album is left flat by long sections where not much is going on.
Still, there are a couple of bright spots on Dietro l'Uragano. "Valigie di Terra" suffers terribly from its absent vocals early on, but has a very nice build-up section from about three minutes in. The keyboard work later in the track is also very good, if somewhat derivtive of ELP's "Karn Evil 9." Some baroque-inspired keyboard work on "Claudette" is also effective.
Somebody who enjoyed the first album more than I did may be more forgiving of the underdeveloped nature of this one. For most people, however, Dietro l'Uragano has value mostly as an intellectual curiosity, like a marble statue half-completed: pleasing details here and there, but elsewhere the gross shape of limbs that only hint at what the artist had in mind. In my more fanciful moods, I often wonder what would happen if a good singer lacking a little direction at the present (for the sake of argument, let's call him Derek W. Fish) set his mind to making this a finished artifact. As things stand, this album is for serious fans of the first album only, and even then it should be treated with caution.
