The B-sides and Rarities CD is an awkward beast, it sits there in your CD collection, scowling at you, daring you to give it a spin, while you know full well that you only bought it because you adore the band and you have everything else by them.
B-sides, especially since the last format-happy decade and a half have become increasingly throwaway affairs, with only a clutch of acts releasing a run of truly wonderful B-sides that stood on equal footing with its more illustrious brethren. Sadly Super Furry Animals are not one of those acts and as a result Out Spaced is their weakest release by some considerable distance. That said, it's not too difficult to see where it fits in the SFA canon, as they have been one of the most musically adventurous guitar bands since the late 90s and it's inevitable that such inventiveness would have the side effect of there being loads of oddities and off-cuts that didn't fit on to their actual albums.
Much of Out Spaced betray SFA's roots as a jokey techno band, as there's loads of sodding about with electronic effects and general gooning about. There are moments of greatness though, as the notorious "The Man Don't Give A Fuck" opens proceedings and the the strangely compelling "Smokin'" makes an appearance, but given that the former was the initially the main reason to buy Out Spaced and is now available on the wonderful Songbook: The Singles, Volume One, it does mean that Out Spaced is now the Super Furry Animal CD that inevitably gathers the most dust.
