Simon Fisher Turner has been making music for over three decades. From his faltering steps as a potential UK rival to Donny Osmond under the supervision of mogul Jonathan King, right through to his most recent work with former Blockheads reeds player Gilad Atzmon, Fisher Turner has created a body of work which has seen him get involved in pop, jazz, sound design and most points in between. He also tried his hand at acting, and continues to this day to pop up in films, with one of his most recent appearances being in The End Of The Affair.
Following his early days as a pop star, Fisher Turner went on to pursue all manner of music-related jobs in his quest to be a part of the business. This included a spell working at indie label Cherry Red, along with various groups formed around himself and Colin Lloyd-Tucker, even squeezing in a place in the original live line-up of The The. However, it was not until he started composing comparatively earnest music for director Derek Jarman, a relationship that survived right through until Jarman's death, that Simon Fisher Turner began to receive the recognition he had long deserved. Concurrent to this soundtrack work was a spell as The King Of Luxembourg, an experimental pop alias that yielded two albums and several singles, but little success. In 1996, out of a desire to produce a 'grown up' record, Fisher Turner persuaded long-standing friend and Mute MD Daniel Miller to release Schwarma, a 16-track album built around Bruce Gilbert's frequency loops that was not a score or original soundtrack. Collaborations with tape archivist Aki Onda and Gilad Atzmon produced the albums Oh Venus and Swift under the alias SFT.
Simon Fisher Turner continues to compose soundtracks, with his most recent being I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, directed by Mike Hodges. Much of Fisher Turner's available output can be obtained through Cherry Red and Mute, although other CDs were released by Beggars Banquet, Humbug, Creation and Sulphur. Still more releases, including the work as Jeremy's Secret and Deux Filles and a number of the King of Luxembourg and Jarman CDs, have long been out of print.
