For its latest recording Discantus came to Spain and enlisted a wonderful Basque boys' choir, part of a choral establishment in San Sebastian known as Coro Easo. Music of the Christmas season, including Holy Innocents and Circumcision, and St. Nicholas is taken from the Beauvais and Sens Offices, along with pieces found in Cividale, Benevento, Moosburg and the Notre-Dame and St. Martial repertoires. There is no unadorned chant, as we often hear from this ensemble, but tropes, organum and original compositions only peripheral to the liturgy.
What makes this disc so delightful is the interaction between the vocal ensemble and the boys, who are most responsive to Lesne's interpretation of the music. Only a dozen boys are listed in the choir, no doubt selected from the best members of the group. Hardly any of the music is familiar, at least in its troped form (in the case of several chants). Verbum patris humanatur is, however, sung in the three-voice version from the Cambridge source, as we have heard in eight previous recordings, rather than the two- voice version from St. Martial. Resonat in laudibus is troped with Magnum nomen Domini Emmanuel, a superb rendition. Orientis partibus is probably the most familiar piece on the disc, but the program is uniquely delightful for the lively singing. Let us hear Coro Easo again! JEROME F. WEBER
