Listeners who love the music of Debussy but wish it were a whole lot sexier should check out Florent Schmitt's ballet La Tragédie de Salomé. It's just as lushly chromatic and dazzlingly colorful as Debussy's music but far more directly sensual and openly sexual. While not quite as debauched as Strauss' opera of the same name, Schmitt's Salomé with its obligatory beheading, its three hoochie coochie dances, and its closing, orgasmic cataclysm is still deeply decadent work that will thrill fans of fin de siècle excess. In this 2006 Apex reissue of a 1990 Erato original recording, Marek Janowski and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France turn in a performance that does full justice -- if that's the right word -- to Schmitt's score. With garish colors, gaudy harmonies, voluptuous melodies, and lubricious rhythms, Janowski and the Philharmonique grant the work every ounce of its sexuality. Ingeniously coupled with Schmitt's gargantuan setting of Psalm 47 for chorus and orchestra, Janowski and the Philharmonique, joined by the Choeurs de Radio France, match the profane with the sacred in a performance as seductively religious as the Salomé is ravishingly sexy. Apex's minimal remastering of Erato's not nearly vivid enough digital sound is distinctly disappointing.
