《巴赫管风琴作品全集》The organist Simon Preston plays all the organ works "that may reasonably be attributed to" J S Bach in this 14-CD boxed set from Deutsche Grammophon, recorded over a decade. Happily, he feels able to include the great Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV565) despite its disputed authenticity. Preston plays it in his exciting later style: crisp, bright and direct rather than heavily romantic and all-stops-out.
The collection includes the six trio sonatas, the fugues and their accompanying preludes, toccatas, fantasias and passacaglia, the five concertos based on Vivaldi and Prince Sachsen-Weimar, and about 150 chorale preludes and settings. Preston proves himself master of ten different instruments in four different countries (Germany, England, Denmark, Norway) by six different builders (Klais, Metzler, Andersen, Wagner, Marcussen and Sauer). The 100-page booklet gives the organ specifications, a short interview with the organist and a long, informative commentary by Malcolm Boyd.
There is one omission. Several works are known to audiences by nicknames, which are easier to remember than BWV numbers, yet none except "The Dorian" (BWV538) is given. How is one to turn to "The Wedge" (BWV548), "St Anne's" (BWV552) or even "The Nightwatchman" (BWV533) fugues? The "Giant Fugue" (BWV680) is hidden away in Clavier-Ubung Part III, the "Fiddle Fugue" is half of the Prelude and Fugue in D minor (BWV539) and the "Jig Fugue" (BWV577), which somewhat surprisingly makes the authenticity cut, lurks among other unattached wugues on CD6 in all its beautiful, exuberant, unacademic, Sunday-morning gaiety and freshness under Preston's dazzling, 61-year-old fingers and feet. --Rick Jones
