专辑简介

Its two strongest points are the superbly sprung and idiomatic conducting of James Levine and the incomparable Isabella of Marilyn Horne. She has said that there's something of her in Isabella and something of Isabella in her, and in this exhilarating performance she proves that statement and leaves no doubt in anyone's mind, on or off the stage. She is, as always, a commanding presence, the kind of person whom everyone naturally turns to when she enters a room. She knows it, too, which makes her the more formidable; and of course her voice perfectly matches her appearance . . . Horne sings with great feeling, without being overpowering, to her Lindoro. He is played by Douglas Ahlsted . . . He has a pleasing lyric voice . . . flexible; he looks quite good and acts with ardour . . . the Mustafà of Paolo Montarsolo . . . it is amarvellously ripe portrayal, lovable and with a hint of menace . . . a marked impression is the lovely playing of the Met orchestra . . . Levine conducts with wit and swagger . . .

Sparkly conducted by James Levine, Ponnelle's 1986 Met production goes for broad comedy rather than subtlety, but Marilyn Horne knows exactly how to sing Isabella, and receives strong buffo support from Paolo Montarsolo.

. . . there has been nobody quite like her since, and I have fond memories of her in this role. It was always one of her best, and this production -- in which I saw her make her Covent Garden farewell in one of that house's great nights -- was a favourite . . . Her own glowing enjoyment is a great life-enhancer throughout, and her voice . . . is still rich, flexible and utterly individual. Paolo Montarsolo in his famous role of the Bey of Algiers knows exactly what to do and his zest too is infectious . . . Douglas Ahlstadt is a lively, personable Lindoro with well schooled technique . . . The others are fine and the ensemble work is spirited and precise. Levine conducts with good-humoured firmness, and the orchestra plays as though Rossini is their number-one composer.
