The memory of Christian Ferras is still surrounded by a powerful aura of mystery and impenetrability, which his suicide in 1982 at the age of 49 only served to reinforce. This most naturally talented of French violinists, an insatiably curious explorer of the contemporary repertoire with a uniquely radiant sound but a fragile, depressive personality, never allowed the torments he was suffering to show through in his music — except, perhaps, in this performance of Sibelius' Violin Concerto, filmed live in 1965. It is the reading of a hypersensitive artist at the height of his powers: besides reproducing the glorious sound of the audio recording made with Karajan during the same period, it blends ardour and extreme sensibility to produce a delirious Romanticism that verges on the sublime, imbued with a white-hot intensity that is profoundly disturbing. The Stravinsky Violin Concerto is a rarity, as Ferras never made a sound recording of it. He displays such fantastic command and virtuosity and his sound is so inventive that the orchestra can barely keep up with him in the final Toccata. To these is added a third masterpiece, the Franck Sonata, as a record of the marvellous duo he formed with Pierre Barbizet. The two players are totally fused, their respective qualities combining perfectly for a version which is even better than the two audio recordings they left. Four magnificent short pieces complete this anthology-cum-portrait of Ferras at the peak of his career, and there is also a bonus featuring the other great French violinist, Zino Francescatti, whose Mediterranean bow works wonders in Mozart's Fourth Concerto.
