Fin de Siecle is a musical project headed Stephane Flauder who also occupies the position of owner and operator of the French label Cauldron music. Cauldron music has been pursuing a mission of promoting French musicians within the neoclassical, neofolk, industrial and experimental genres. Having produced bands such as Fin de Siecle, Storm of Capricorn, and Darkly Pale Cauldron has become a reliable source for discovering new and innovative artists.
Fin de Siecle recently released the Summertime EP as an addition to their growing body of music. The music of Fin de Siecle is most easily described as listenable experiments in music. Staying true to listener friendly arrangements while at the same time exploring new musical terrain Fin de Siecle create intelligent and charming songs that deviate from the norm without becoming so unusual that they alienate the listener.
Summetime EP is a great two-song introduction to the band. The CD begins with the first song titled “Stranger.” “Stranger” begins with random percussion sounds, eerie ambient music and a drum machine that issues sparse beats while the sound of children playing echoes across the disjointed music. An electric guitar enters the song and the music tightens into a new formation led by the drums and an electric and bass guitar. The child’s voice enters and departs the song as a disembodied entity. The music is simple yet engaging as it steadily advances, partly calming and partly menacing. The child’s words are indiscernible but her intermittent laughter is unmistakably joyful. As the song advances lethargic male vocals are added and the gentle sounds of woodwind. The male vocalist sounds like a drunken Nick Cave and adds to the darker side of the music while the woodwind sides with the more uplifting sounds of the child’s voice. The song wraps up smoothly without ever offering the listener a direct explanation or narrative.
"Summertime” is the title track and the second and final track on the Summertime EP. Summertime utilizes samples from a Billie Holiday rendition of the song and mixes these samples with industrial and experimental sounds. The song begins with wavering samples that have been manipulated beyond recognition yet they retain some harmony. These distorted samples are mixed with slight static and minimal industrial elements as they are formed into a brief introduction to the song. After nearly a minute this experimental phase ends and a guitar takes over playing a lonely song while a female voice sings softly in the background. Various unidentifiable sounds enter the song as minimal unobtrusive elements and the sound of night crickets appears. The song shifts once more with all the previous elements fading and a sample of the Billie Holiday song takes center stage accompanied by distorted brass instrumentation that plays the dominate melody of the original song. The sample and brass instrumentation wavers and quivers between speakers and washes over the listener like a heat wave in the Deep South. The music is dreamy and slightly confused, hazy like a hot summer day. After a lengthy rendition of looped and remixed sample work, the song ends.
Fin de Siecle is intelligent experimental music that is engaging and innovative without leading the listener into punishing or extremely abstract musical domains. If you are looking to listen to something new and refreshing that defies musical standards and pushes forward into new terrain then try out Fin De Siecle.
