Undoubtedly, in view of the composers brought together here under the US banner by the Arditti String Quartet. For if Nancarrow was influenced by jazz shortly after the Second World War (Quartet n°1), Ives on the other hand created his own polyrhythmic style at the begining of the twentieth century (Scherzo). Likewise before creating a minimalism based on the simple reiteration of e theme, La Monte Young and Alvin Lucier tried their hand at serialism during the fifties (On remembering a naiad, Fragments), while John Cage (Four) and Morton Feldman (Structures) upset the rules of time by very gently 'liberating sound'.
