"Rufus Wainwright, who has compiled this present CD, heard about the Yellow Lounge from Neil Tennant. They are friends, and Tennant recently helped him with the recording of his album, Release the Stars, released by Universal Music. Wainwright grew up with recordings from the Deutsche Grammophon label: his parents are the famous folk musicians Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and they often played their favorite classical music tracks to young Rufus.
His choice on this CD is peppered with opera arias: I myself am no great fan of classical singing even today, since I prefer natural voices like those or Wainwright or Tennant, yet the fascination that opera exerted on Wainwright, with its exaggerated dramatic escalation of human emotions and the virtuosic interchange of instrumental and vocal pieces he has chosen, has the power to go straight to the heart.
Wainwright's program is not limited to his favorite classical works. He loaded all the CDs which Deutsche Grammophon sent him by courier onto his iPod and set it to shuffle. As a result, he discovered and shares with us - the slow movement from Haydn's first string quartet, the composer Rameau who he described as being 'absolutely contemporary sounding', and the wonderful Enigma Variations by Elgar.
The two compositions which Wainwright arranged for the Fauré Quartet demonstrate what an outstanding composer he is and that a Romantic heart beats in his breast: these are two of the highlights of the CD."
