David Oistrakh's fame always overshadowed that of Leonid Kogan, the Soviet Union's eternal "second" violin. Kogan's playing was perhaps less lambent than Oistrakh's, but it combined staggering virtuosity with an extraordinary sound. Kogan was an unusually rounded musician with a copious repertoire, as demonstrated by the films on this DVD, in which we rediscover the whole range of Kogan's ability. He moves with brio and aplomb from Handel to Shostakovich, from Falla to Brahms, from Bach to Beethoven and from Paganini to Debussy. His vision of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, quite different from, say, Menuhin's, is both stupefying and penetrating. The DVD bonus reminds us that Kogan was also an excellent chamber musician who played, amongst other things, in a trio with Gilels et Rostropovich. He also performs a sonata for two violins by Jean-Marie Leclair with his wife, and demonstrates that he was not only a peerless virtuoso but also an excellent and rigorous musician.
