To bring the live concert experience home, Best of Beyond Warped features recordings made during the 2004 tour and reflects its diverse lineup with bands ranging from old school to new. One of the very first punk bands to emerge from Southern California, The Skulls made their debut in 1977, pre-dating other vital groups of the era like The Circle Jerks, Social Distortion and the Adolescents. Formed in 1989 in the OC, Guttermouth quickly became known for their fast, loud and hysterically offensive lyrics. With song titles like "Bruce Lee Vs. The Kiss Army" and "Octopus Hairpiece," the band was a runaway hit with the crowd during their stint on the Warped Tour. The Phenomenauts' mix of punk, pop and rockabilly isn't what first got the attention of the Tour organizers. The band crashed a show in 2003 and performed for the next month and a half until someone noticed they weren't supposed to be on the bill. But it was enough to impress, and the band was officially invited back for the 2004 tour. Undoubtedly the only band on the bill that year to mix traditional Native American drum prayersong with speed punk and political lyrics, Blackfire's "alter-native" intense performances are marked by political diatribe about their Native American heritage. New school punk band Pulley, hardcore Side Sixty Seven, unapologetic and in-your-face Duane Peters and the Hunns and Lennon (with Warped rarity - a female songwriter) round out the compilation.
