Spirit Catcher have always been autonomous and industrious with their impeccably engineered sound, and despite there being many who inhabit a similar realm, their deeply groovy disco consistently stands out, brilliantly gleaming like sleek silver. ‘Night Vision’ – their second album but first for kindred label 2020 Vision – is coolly efficient and effortlessly sexy. For 5 years now these guys have been pumping out quality late night burners that have sparkled and shimmied on discerning dance floors everywhere, spun by everyone from Erol Alkan, to The Glimmers and Michael Mayer. This album, like their fantastic debut ‘Lazerbeams’, is a collection of previously released club cuts. What is surprising about ‘Night Vision’ is that, despite its ‘compilation’ nature, it manages to mesmerize and seduce as an artist album.
Like Metro Area’s sly winks and cheeky nudges, Spirit Catcher likes to let you exclusively into their tongue-in-cheek disco-tech, where emotions only matter under the mirror ball. The dreamy Rhodes stabs and twinkling keys that descend on sultry opener ‘Motown Spring’ soundtrack a hot Manhattan sunset, while the gyrating ‘Roller Coaster’ builds the head of steam for that first gin & tonic on the dance floor. This is nightclub music, but it’s classic, classy night club music built for skimpy kittens in impossible heels and dance floor predators in metallic suits. ‘Space Crash’ has afro-funk percussion tussling with starship strings and the bright, emotive ‘Sweet Deal’ swoons and swaggers in flashing lights. Then, shifting gears like the best unmixed mix CD you’ve never heard, Spirit Catcher step it up. ‘Time Emulator’ throws colorful splashes of analogue at a wall of slap bass, and the title track turns on demented Italo-disco charm.
The last quarter is sleazy drug fuelled bliss, Spirit Catcher not forgetting their long affiliation with techno wizards like Fabrice Lig by toughening up their disco with sharp Detroit rhythms. Club smash ‘Voodoo Night’ is an outrageous instrumental interpretation of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, sounding the kind of roof tearing dub Shep Pettibone would pull out if he was playing an acid house party. The taut and tight deep house of ‘Harmonize’ glistens with 4am sweat, flickering with intense progressions and relentless chord ascension. Closer ‘Dirty Circuit’ brings it all full circle with filtered Motor City riffs and beautifully synthetic sirens bellowing over a timeless disco groove and keeping the club lights off.
This is supremely crafted and elegantly energetic dance music from Spirit Catcher, their loving nods to 80s disco and Paper Recordings style deep house perfectly suit the electro house of here and now. ‘Night Vision’ is as good, if not better, than any of that genre’s albums out there today.
