专辑简介

Upon entering Detektivbyran's website, a flash animation portrays three children playing an enchanting little instrumental track on the outskirts of a humble little village, presumably in Sweden. Slowly signs of life emerge from the village - a man drinks alcohol on the sidewalk, another reads a newspaper under a street light, bats fly overhead in the night sky, stars twinkle... and the frailty of life is displayed in full. Naturally, this fragile environment is reflected in the band's music, which can best be filed under the "folktronica" tag, but inevitably such a description is lacking. Detektivbyran takes a largely unorthodox approach to the instrumental genre, and to the band's credit, it's highly enjoyable and largely successful.
While listening to Hemvagen, Detektivbyran's debut EP, I find myself drawing comparisons to the work of Yann Tiersen and Efterklang. Classical and folk influences are superimposed on an electronic backdrop and a wide array of instrumentation is utilized by this trio en route to crafting a magical work of art. Electronic beats and glitches make up much of the EP's percussion, which only sparingly relies on drums. Much of the band's attention is given to the accordion, piano, and glockenspiel, which makes up the majority of the sound's volume, and combine in various ways to give a distinctive sound to Hemvagen. This myriad of analog and electronic instrumentation is expertly controlled over the span of seven tracks, demonstrating the band's great understanding of its peers.
"E18" starts the album with a playful jingle that quickly builds into a sporadic combination of accordion, drums, and glockenspiel. An electronic interlude brings the band to another playful accordion bout, which fades out with a duet between the glockenspiel and marching drums. Hemvagen functions similarly for the majority of its duration; At times electronic and organic instrumentation contrasts each other, and at others they mesh perfectly. The parallel again goes back to the village animation - life is a complicated process with many components, and at any given time certain properties will express themselves with different amounts of emphasis and persuasion. In this aspect, Detektivbyran reproduces the little nuances of life with astounding success.
When the experimental side of the Hemvagen takes a rest, Detekivbyran shows a more sincere quality. "Monster," "Granmon," and "Vanerhavet" drop the brash accordion, and the beauty underlying the band's sound is fully revealed. Light electronics carry "Monster" into the clouds with the smoothest ascent imaginable. "Granmon" strips the auxiliary support and shines with a sole piano. The track slowly unwraps itself, lying the villagers down into bed for the night and turning out the last lights. With the village asleep the glockenspiel rejoins the piano for a midnight waltz. The guitar makes one of its rare appearances, but it's subtlety is unable to break the passion of the main players. And we dance to the heavens...
Hemvagen is an unquestionably strong release from a young, creative trio with a penchant for quirky, enchanting music. The future is bright for Detektivbyran, in time we shall witness them coming to form in a truly stunning body of work. Until then, watch the stars twinkle under the night sky, grab a cold one, and let the soothing sounds of Detekivbyran tuck you in.
